You guessed it, more sanding!  Now that the ball has dropped all the way and ‘09 is long gone it’s time to get back to work.

With three sets of hands, two sanders and one mean-spirited grinder quick work was made of shaping the hull for the last time.

Three hours and a half gallon of blue dust later, sanding was done.  Time for a quick lunch and back to the grind.

After some vacuuming and quick measuring we put on the waterline and made it very official with the application of blue tape.

Now that we have a waterline marked and a smooth bottom it’s time to paint.

The bottom paint that we use on First Team is Baltoplate and it is a very good bottom paint.   Baltoplate is a hard antifouling paint that you can burnish into a very smooth finish.  And since we had some left over from last seasons painting, it was perfect for Valkyrie.

Since we will be applying multiple coats of bottom paint and the vinylester resin that we used in layup a barrier coat was decided against.  Thin coats of Baltoplate are key for the finish you want, so a low nap roller for epoxy was employed in the application.  Not only do the thin coats dry quicker but also you have less high spots that have to be worn away when you burnish the surface.
